Back to basics
Today I met with some girlfriends for lunch and we started talking about health and nutrition. Two hours later, I came to the realization that other people may not be as health obsessed as I am. Granted, I am the first to admit that I am a health and nutrition nerd. I can spend hours researching and reading about our bodies and how we function. I find food nutrition fascinating in addition to the politics involved.
I’ve talked with people from all stages of life and the lesson I’d like to share is that no matter what stage you’re in you can always incorporate the basics. If you try and get back to our roots with a diet in whole food (preferably plant-based) you are off to a great start. The problem today is that we consider contents from a box, or a can, food. Yes, it’s edible and may taste yummy, but what nutritional value does it offer your body? Supermarkets as we know them today weren’t around until 1930 so you would get your whole wheat and fruit and veggies from the farmers themselves. Today, most people wouldn’t know where their food was made. If we could begin our grocery shopping by starting in the produce aisle, you wouldn’t have room in the cart for the other stuff.
Let’s get back to the basics and shop for real whole foods. Experiment and try a new vegetable each week. If you incorporate just one new fruit or vegetable per week, you’re making a start and creating a healthy example to friends, your spouse, or your kids.
